Why I Recommend Taking a Break From Retinoids During Central Oregon Summers ☀️🌲

Living in beautiful Bend means we spend a lot of time outside — and honestly, that’s one of the best parts about living here. Whether you’re paddle boarding at Elk Lake, floating the Deschutes River, hiking around the Three Sisters Wilderness, or grabbing a bite of at one of the many outdoor food lots, our skin takes on a lot during the summer months.
As much as I love retinoids for acne, pigmentation, texture, and anti-aging, I often recommend my Central Oregon clients consider taking a little break from them during summer.
Central Oregon Sun Hits Different ☀️
A lot of people don’t realize how intense the sun exposure is here. Between our high desert climate, elevation, dry air, endless sunny days, and the almost inevitable wildfire smoke, skin can become stressed much faster than people expect.
Even clients who are diligent with SPF can still experience:
Increased redness
Irritation
Tight, dehydrated skin
Flaking and peeling
Heat sensitivity
Barrier damage
And when you combine retinoid use with:
Long days on the boat at Lake Billy Chinook
Mountain biking Phil’s Trail
Farmers markets downtown
River floating
Camping weekends
…it can sometimes become too much for the skin barrier.
Summer Skin Needs a Different Approach ⛱
Retinoids increase cell turnover, which is amazing when skin is healthy and balanced. But during summer, I often see clients whose skin starts looking inflamed rather than radiant.
Sometimes the skin isn’t asking for stronger products — it’s asking for support.
Summer is usually the perfect time to focus on:
Hydration
Barrier repair
Antioxidants
Gentle exfoliation
Consistent mineral SPF
Tyrosinase inhibitors (brighteners)
Especially here in Central Oregon, where the combination of sun, wind, dry air, and outdoor recreation can really challenge the skin barrier.
Taking a Break Doesn’t Mean Losing Progress 🕰
One thing I always tell my clients at 541 Esthetics is this: skincare should support your lifestyle.
You should be able to enjoy floating, hiking, boating, camping, biking, swimming and outdoor chilling without constantly battling irritated skin.
A temporary pause or reduction in retinoid use usually does not erase your progress. A seasonal reset is normal and healthy.
I recommend:
Switching to a retinol alternative like Bakuchiol
Increase antioxidant support
Focusing more on hydration and SPF
Adding a dermaplane to your monthly treatments
Every skin type is different, and there’s never a one-size-fits-all approach.
My Philosophy on Summer Skincare 🌿
Enjoying life and having healthy skin should go hand in hand; Central Oregon's brief, stunning summers shouldn't be marred by irritated or damaged skin.
Skincare should evolve with the seasons, your environment, and your lifestyle.
Sometimes the healthiest thing we can do for our skin is simply listen to it — and in the middle of a hot, sunny Bend summer, that may mean giving your retinoids a little vacation too.
Stay Moisturized,
Molly
